GREAT FOR GROUNDING

This is a very balanced sequence of classical yoga postures that helps to ground ourselves, tone and stretch all the key muscles, energise our body and calm our mind down.

The sequence

The main part of the sequence consists of a total of 60 postures & movements, many of them named after nature – animals (eg Cat, Pigeon), as well as a mini sequence involving the Tree Pose.

Root Chakra sounds are chanted during the opening and closing of this sequence, as this is the chakra that is connected with the earth.

Benefits

The Earth Sequence Level 1 is very balanced and varied, designed to open up the spine in all directions, as well as tone the entire body: back, core, upper body and arms, lower body and legs.

This sequence is designed to flow at whatever pace suits you and you can even pause the flow to hold some postures static for a few breaths. After the body is warmed up, the main part of this sequence can be used as a self-contained asana practice.

It has been designed to make you feel grounded, you will be aware of your contact with the earth/mat beneath you many times during this sequence.

Prostrations to Mother Earth – Extended Childs and Bowing Pigeons

Warriors are ecological, to defend Mother Earth, like Greenpeace, Friends of The Earth, Greta Thunberg.

Tree Sequence Component  – represents growth and the circle of life: the tree grows tall, opens up its branches (offering shelter and gifts of fruit), then shedding its leaves in autumn which are collected and you complete the cycle by returning to tree; alternatively, it represents the Water Cycle, with water evaporating, raindrops falling as your gifts that you offer to others in this lifetime.

Please see the video below, where our Sunday morning students are performing this sequence on the left side. You would perform it on both sides, starting with the right side. As always, do please listen to your body and only do the moves that it is comfortable doing – never force the body into any shape.

Closing Notes

Perform an even number of rounds to balance out the right and left hand sides. Then:

  1. Sit in Vajrasana with hands in prayer.
  2. Chant “Lam” x 3.
  3. Sit with eyes closed and offer a prayer of gratitude to Mother Earth.

Finally, rest in Savasana for a few minutes: feel the ground beneath you as you lie down and let go of all your burdens 🙂
